On December 4, 2021, Mount Semeru volcano erupted on Java Island, Indonesia. Semeru, the tallest mountain on Java, spewed ash that blanketed nearby villages and sent people fleeing in panic. The eruption destroyed buildings and severed a bridge connecting two areas in the nearby district of Lumajang, with the city of Malang. As of December 7, the Indonesian disaster agency said the death toll rose to 34, with up to 27 missing. The volcano erupted again on Monday, December 6, and Indonesia’s Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation warned of continued seismic activity.
