Typhoon Goni slammed into the Philippines on Sunday, November 1, 2020 causing severe damage and killing at least 16 people. It has been estimated that 80-90% of the buildings in Virac, one of the first and hardest hit areas, have been damaged by the storm. Civil defense officials estimate about 370,000 people have been displaced by the storm and tens of thousands of homes have been destroyed, though the capital of Manila was largely spared. Goni was the most powerful storm to hit the country since Typhoon Haiyan in 2013.
